Why 2015 will be a year well spent for an entrepreneur

For an entrepreneur, the decision to join a business school is not easy. What made it tougher was the fact that I got married a week before joining ISB!

However, I knew how important network and skill sets were for a business and personal professional growth. I reckoned it was a good time to step back from the day-to-day affairs of running a business to build skill sets, learn and build a great network, and, in the process, end the journey with a top business school brand name for life.

So I applied to ISB and got through.

Given the breakneck speed at which things are taught here, my first and foremost takeaway has been an unbelievable capacity to learn things. And fast. Right from reading financial statements to learning countless number of frameworks and models, I've done quite a lot so far to help me grow my business.

However, ISB has given me a lot more outside of pure problem solving in the classroom. I have learnt a couple of distinct skills that I've seen myself improving on here so far.

1. I'm able to structure complex problems better. Probably the best thing that I have learnt so far here is how any business problem in the world can be solved through a simple 2 X 2 matrix. Steve Jobs used to do it and so do many other successful people.

2. The network that I've built here so far is just fantastic. Interactions with venture capitalists and successful entrepreneurs through various speaker sessions have given me great insights to build a successful business. Only at ISB can you walk out of your room to hear a top guy from Accel Partners talking about what makes entrepreneurs make or break it. Where else can you expect such sessions within 260 acres day after day?

3. I have learnt to work hard. As an entrepreneur, I've been on my own and I have worked hard. But ISB takes hard work to a different level altogether. Here you gotta work 10 times harder compared to wherever you were before. It's frustrating at times but enough for me to break free from my comfort zone.

4. Above all, at a place like ISB where there are tons of things to do at any given time, I've learnt to say no. It is a sign of better decision-making. ISB makes you understand prioritization and focus - it's difficult to survive such an intensive MBA program without this.

That is why I love this school. Where else do you get the best of all worlds - top faculty, insightful speakers and incredible peers - at one place in one single year?
