Dean’s Reflections

Dear Friends,

Professor M R Rao, Dean Emeritus, ISB, retired at the end of June. In honour of his contributions to higher education, we had a conference on "What does it take to build a great institute of learning?"

As I reflect on ISB’s journey in the last 10 years, I am certain that great institutions begin with a grand vision, a central idea which appeals to a diverse set of people. For ISB, our vision centred on providing highest quality education to students, grooming them as leaders, and working on world-class research. Our founders ensured that this vision is translated into action by bringing together a very large group of partners – students, academia, Founder Schools Kellogg and Wharton, industry, government, key members of civil society, and top professionals to run the school.

We were also clear that in our desire to achieve our vision quickly, we did not ever compromise on quality. From ensuring that we admitted only those students who would meet the top schools standard, to working to attract and retain outstanding faculty, to building an infrastructure that we are all proud of, we remained steadfast in our commitment to quality. There have been several challenges along the way. Fortunately, we had great leadership of the School in those years.  Hiring great faculty was hard in the initial years, but thanks to leaders like MR, we now have 46 outstanding resident faculty. Raising funds for the School is always challenging, especially outside the USA. We have benefited from the far sightedness of many wonderful philanthropists. I am sure that in future too, we can work together to grow and build a top class Institution.

I look forward to hearing from you. Do write to me at ajit_rangnekar@isb.edu.

With Regards,
