A one-day unconference in ISB was organised recently by the Srini Raju Centre for IT and Networked Economy (SRITNE). Participants learned about the diverse application of Big Data at the event. Presentations made by NGOs, entrepreneurs, ethnographic researchers and technologists attested to the variety of ways in which experts from different fields are using data visualisation and data analysis. Nimmi Rangaswami from Microsoft Research spoke about how her approach to Big data – by enriching the data with data from ethnographic research presents a more nuanced understanding of the subject.
Shri Bharat Vir Wanchoo, Hon’ble Governor of Goa, visited the Mohali campus recently, where he was the guest of honour at the swearing-in ceremony of the Graduate Student Board.
Governor Wanchoo spoke about the relevance and importance of character building and ethics in transforming India, adding that India is slowly, but surely on its way to becoming an economic super power in the world. However, he cautioned that much depends on how Indians conduct themselves in addressing global challenges, which have been brought about by the deepening chasm of inequalities as well as the growing trend of globalisation. However, he was optimistic that if the youth work with moral and ethical integrity, the challenges can be countered. “Fame is vapour…, the only thing that endures is character,” he said reminding the students that they need to work with a sense of moral and social responsibility.
ISB received its largest individual alumni grant from Dr Satyanarayana Chava, CEO, Laurus Labs and an alumnus of its Post Graduate Programme for Senior Executives (PGPMAX). The one-time contribution of Rs 30 lakhs from Dr Chava will enable the school to partially fund up to 25 deserving candidates of the programme on “Technology Commercialisation” designed and delivered by the ISB’s Centre for Executive Education (CEE). This programme is targeted at research scientists, professionals from life science sector, government officials involved in research agencies and employees of financial institutions funding technology commercialisation
Around 50 students from the founding class of the Management Programme for Family Business (MFAB) were at the campus recently for an orientation session. This 15-month management programme is designed to help young business scions take their family business to the next level.
The class comprises highly successful participants with good business acumen from diverse industries like manufacturing, hospitality, education, infrastructure and construction. The average revenue of their companies is approximately 450 crores.
During the orientation session the students became familiar with their peers and participated in team building activities. The session prepared the students in understanding the programme and what is expected from them. The students will be back on campus in August 2013 to attend the 1st term.
The Munjal Institute for Global Manufacturing recently conducted a short workshop on “Intricacies of Supply Chain Management,” in the Mohali Campus. The workshop was conducted by Professor ManMohan S Sodhi, Executive Director of the Institute. The key highlights were the discussions on supply chain design, capacity utilisation, outbound logistics and a case study of an on-going project on truck unions and their impact on manufacturing. Both entrepreneurs and ISB students attended the workshop.
