The ISB Super League is Here!

The Duke of Wellington once said that battle of Waterloo was won on the cricket field of Eton, implying the importance of sports in the all-round development of the personality of a man. A worthy manager of an organization has to fight a Waterloo at every step and combat the fierce onslaught of the competing business houses. In fact, a strategy that takes into consideration exceptional factors and anticipated possibilities aligns sport and business on the same straight line.

ISB attaches utmost importance to sports and holds a long and elaborate sports program-ISB SUPER LEAGUE (ISL) with active participation of students in several multiform events. ISL is a unique initiative in real life sports management and is a one-of-a-kind experience that one can get in a business school.

Since its inception on Oct 20, 2010, the ISL has been one of the most exciting events at ISB, spread across 3-4 months. Similar to IPL, it follows a franchise model where the bidders first buy the team in an auction and then bid for their players in another live auction using virtual currency or bidding points.

Excitement, fun and passion - both on and off the field – is palpable in the campus; but given the bucks at stake, it also brings a lot of strategic planning behind the scenes.
Sameer Mehta, Class of 2011, feels that strategy is a key factor during auctions. “During the player auctions at the inaugural ISL, we focused solely on identifying good players that are not well-known so that we can get them at lower prices. That strategy paid off very well for us because these "hidden diamonds" played crucial roles for us across sports and helped us win. Knowledge is power!"

This year’s ISL auctioning brought in a whopping Rupees 17.5 lakh, of which the winners will bag 60% and the runners-up 35%. The remaining 5% goes to the ISL board every year for the arrangements.

This year, the event at the school’s Mohali campus was flagged off by Bishan Singh Bedi, the former captain of the Indian cricket team. Through this tournament, team owners learn sports management, players enjoy competitive events, and organizers juggle with event management experience. Above all, the ISB community comes together with active participation from students, faculty, alumni and spouses alike.

This sporting extravaganza witnesses 9 sports with four teams -namely Hurricanes, Hyderabad Nizams, Raging Bulls and Team Titans. The plethora of sports played include team sports such as cricket, frisbee, football, basketball and volleyball, and individual sports like table tennis, badminton, squash and the duathalon.

Bharath Sivaraman from the Class of 2014 said, “ISL was a great opportunity to try things out and learn from the experience in a fun-filled and low-risk environment. For 6 months, I was like the CEO of a sporting franchise and I learned valuable lessons along the way in leadership, teamwork, trust and operations etc. This, in my opinion, has been one of the best avenues to learn and such an experience would only be possible at ISB.”

Sameer, who is the cofounder of 135 Tech Labs, feels that ISL is actually a lesson in ethics & dealing with pressure. In fact, he has an interesting experience to share. “We could have won the inaugural ISL trophy if we’d have lost a league stage match to ensure that the eventual winners don’t make it to the finals. We had some pressure from other players and owners to play the match with a second string team but we chose to play our best and won the match. We eventually lost the trophy but we took the right decision. That’s what matters.”
