Vikram Mago
PGPFC
Senior Associate, Institutional Equity Sales
Can you tell us a little about your family background/ history?
I have spent a majority of my life in Mumbai. My father retired from the Government and my parents now live in Delhi.
Briefly describe your personal and professional achievements (including recent awards/ special projects).
I set up the U.S. desk at JM Financial Institutional Equities and achieved strong revenue growth. In my previous assignments at Standard Chartered Bank, Treasury Internal Audit found out that the credit derivative spreads for MTM were way off the market, and at HDFC, Treasury derived a swaps pricing model.
Tell us about your profile pre-ISB, and recap your professional life after ISB, including your career progression.
I used to work in the Tax and Regulatory division of Arthur Andersen pre-ISB. I completed my CA and joined ISB. Post-ISB, I worked in the Treasury division of HDFC Ltd, Standard Chartered Bank Treasury Internal Audit; JM Financial Institutional Equity Sales and DSP Merrill Lynch Institutional Equity Sales. I have managed a career shift from Tax to Institutional Equity Sales.
Describe your fondest memory of ISB.
Enjoying the campus whenever we got the time.
In your personal life, how have you changed post-ISB? Do you see yourself doing something differently because you went to ISB? What has left a lasting impression?
I guess my personal life has changed more post my marriage than post ISB! The biggest advantage of an MBA is understanding an issue from all angles and getting a sense of how engineers, CAs, people from an arts background, etc., would approach it.
How do you think ISB has contributed to your career growth?
ISB has helped me to make a career shift from Tax and Regulatory to Institutional Equity Sales.
If you have to sum up ISB in one word:
Holistic.
What was the main highlight of your programme at the ISB?
Getting an international quality education in India.
Word of advice for the current class?
An MBA degree will help you for the next 30 years of your working life. Look at the long-term benefit.
What was your favourite course/ class at ISB and why?
Financial Management, as I love analysing company financials.
Was there anyone during your time at ISB who acted as a mentor for you? Tell us a little about this relationship and why it was valuable.
As we were the first batch, I guess that’s what we missed out on.
What are the areas in which you can contribute to ISB?
I could contribute to ISB both professionally and financially.
What do you enjoy most about your current career position?
Every day is a new day and I love reading company annual reports.
What is the next new thing in the industry or vertical you are working in? Any trends that you can see?
Institutional Equity broking is a very competitive industry, and I don’t see that reducing in the near future. Clients just need pure value add in terms of stock ideas and relevant corporate access.
