The residency included a two-day workshop on “Emerging Technologies and Public Policy - Indian Perspectives and Global Developments” by Dr. Srinivas Yanamandra, Fellow, Bharti Institute of Public Policy, Indian School of Business.
Over two days, the workshop explored the interplay between emerging technologies and public policy, focusing on India’s digital transformation success story and its evolving AI regulatory landscape. The participants gained insights into how policy decisions influence technological adoption, governance, and global positioning.
The first day of the workshop examined how India successfully built Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) to address policy challenges in identity, payments, and data governance. The sessions covered India Stack innovations such as Aadhaar, UPI, and digital credit, highlighting their role in removing payment frictions and promoting financial inclusion. The discussion also focused on the technology policy choices that enabled rapid implementation and how India's DPI model is now being exported globally as a framework for financial inclusion and digital transformation. The second day explored Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, including Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and large language models, and their impact on public policy and governance.
A gala dinner was also organised for the cohort to enable them to interact and network with their peers outside the lecture theatres.
Policy Walk
As part of their curriculum, the participants of the Advanced Management Programme (Public Policy) cohort 2025 embarked on a three-day Policy Walk to gain firsthand experience in policy design and implementation in New Delhi. During the Policy Walk, the participants had the privilege to visit the National Defence College (NDC), India’s premier institution for strategic studies. Brigadier Rajesh Raman, Secretary, NDC, provided an insightful briefing to the cohort on the institution’s pivotal role in shaping India’s security leadership since its establishment in 1956 and formal inauguration by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1960. Adding to the depth of discussions, Air Marshal Hardeep Bains, Commandant, NDC, shared invaluable perspectives on contemporary national security challenges and the evolving role of defence institutions in shaping policy decisions.
The cohort attended an inspiring session with Dr Jyotsna Suri, Chairperson & Managing Director of The Lalit Suri Hospitality Group and Keshav Suri, Executive Director of The Lalit Suri Hospitality Group, who shared their deeply personal and powerful journey for LGBTQ+ rights. Keshav Suri urged the participants, as future policy leaders, to take bold steps in eliminating discriminatory policies and advocated for equal rights, including marriage and legal recognition of partnerships.
In an engaging and thought-provoking session, Puneet Yadu Dalmia, CEO of Dalmia Bharat Group, inspired the Advanced Management Programme (Public Policy) cohort to dream big and envision India as the world's leading superpower. The session, followed by dinner, concluded with a mesmerising 'Light and Sound Show' at the Red Fort, presented by the Dalmia Group.
In an insightful session, Dammu Ravi, IFS, Secretary (ER), Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, delved into India’s trajectory in global economic trends, emphasising its potential to become a truly ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’ in the future.
Dr Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, Hon’ble Minister of State for Rural Development & Communications, Government of India, in an impactful session, spoke candidly about his humble beginnings and shared how his journey—from medicine to public service—was guided by personal philosophies that continue to shape his leadership today. He emphasised that ambition alone is not enough— “Laziness kills ambition,” he articulated, reminding students that discipline and purpose must follow dreams.
During her interactive session, Smriti Irani, former Cabinet Minister, Government of India, indulged in a free-wheeling conversation with the cohort. From her journey as a TV artist to being a political leader, she shared her experience of the nuanced policymaking process. Smriti Irani shared insights into how effective policymaking is rooted in collaboration, underlining that it's a common misconception to think that power alone shapes policy. She said, 'It is the people who make policy; elected representatives give it a voice and form". The cohort appreciated her clarity of thought and innovative ideas behind initiatives like the New Education Policy and POSHAN, which continue to shape India’s development journey.
During his session, Devesh Chaturvedi, IAS, Secretary, Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India, reflected on the evolving landscape of policymaking in India, observing that policy frameworks often emerge in response to crises.
Marichi Mathur, Senior Vice President, Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), shared how India is revolutionising digital commerce with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC)—a transformative initiative under IndiaStack that champions openness, decentralisation, and interoperability in the digital economy.
