The Indian School of Business (ISB) celebrated Graduation Day at its two campuses recently. At the Hyderabad campus, the 12th graduating class of the Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) and the Post Graduate Programme in Management for Senior Executives (PGPMAX) Class of 2012 were awarded certificates upon completion of their courses. The Chief Guest Ramachandra Guha, the noted historian, writer and Padma Bhushan recipient spoke about India’s past, present and how the graduating class can make a difference to its future. Continuing this theme at the Mohali campus, the Chief Guest Kishore Mahbubani, Dean and Professor in the Practice of Public Policy, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore, presented certificates to the 197 students from the founding PGP Class of 2013 and in his speech he stressed, “If India has to become a superpower it depends on the quality of the brainpower in the country.”

The chief guests at the graduation day ceremonies in both campuses spoke in their own inimitable styles but they both stressed about the tremendous opportunities that lay in India and how the graduating class can make a difference to the nation.
Predictably, historian Ramachandra Guha’s speech traced the emergence of India from its colonial past to its current position of an emerging economy. The path was strewn with endless possibilities where one wrong turn could have resulted in perennial instability. Professor Kishore Mahbubani also stated that India was at an inflection point but that he was optimistic about the country’s progress. Giving the analogy of ISB’ success story, he explained, “If you can take a piece of barren land and transform it into a top school,” India’s transformation was also possible.
The Professor of the Year Award at the ISB is decided by the students through a preferential nomination system and is a validation by the students, of the excellence of their chosen mentors. It is also an expression of gratitude to the professor who has managed to create an unequivocal impression on the student body. Each student nominates one professor for the Core Terms and one for the Elective Terms. Professors Louis Thomas and Madan Pillutla were nominated the “Professor of the Year for Elective Courses” and “Professor of the Year for Core Courses” respectively, by the graduating PGP Class of 2013 at the Mohali campus. While the PGP students at the Hyderabad campus chose Professors Arun Pereira and Omesh Kini as “Professor of the Year for Elective Courses” and “Professor of the Year for Core Courses” respectively.
Professor Suren Mansinghka was selected as the “Professor of the Year” by students of the PGPMAX Class of 2012 for the exceptional teaching of the course “Financial Decision Making for Managers.”
