Sabin Joshi
Class of 2009
Spandana Spoorthy Financial Limited
Senior Manager

Sector: Finance
Total Work Experience: Around 4 years
Personal Interests: Sports and music.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your professional life after the ISB.

I am from Nepal. I did my graduation there, and then I was working in Nepal for two years in Standard Chartered Bank. Following that I had my own investment firm, and then I got into the ISB. Post ISB, I really wanted to get into the finance sector but all the finance jobs were virtually frozen due to the recession. The other area that really was of interest to me was Microfinance. I’ve been in Microfinance for almost ten months now. Right now I am working in the finance team as a senior manager on raising debt and equity. So currently my job profile is raising debt, capital market and de-securitisation.

What was your key takeaway from the ISB?

As far as the ISB experience goes, I think that was the best one year that I have had so far in terms of where I studied, learned and enjoyed the most. And the immediate takeaway besides the world-class education is undoubtedly the people. My current job requires a lot of networking and the takeaway that has truly come handy for me is the network that I have built in this one year and at the alum interaction we had post our graduation.

How has the ISB contributed to your career growth?

Being from Nepal, I have studied in India and Nepal back and forth. I wanted to be in India and the ISB has given me the platform to work in the sector that I wanted to.

What is your vision for the school?

I think that the vision that was set at inception of getting leaders ready for the future should not change at all. Besides that, I think the focus of the ISB should be to move towards a more diverse background. If you could get at least 20 to 25 percent international students, not including NRIs, that would contribute a lot to the diversity of the college.

What are the strengths that the school can leverage upon and areas it can improve?

A strength that the School can leverage on are the facilities that you have at the ISB. At the end of the year you won’t be able to use all of them and realise that you missed out on so many things that you could have done in that one year. I have been in Hyderabad since the time I graduated and I am using every facility that is possible such as the LRC and the Recreation Centre. Other than the facilities, we leverage on the faculty and the people. And ten years down the line if I bump into someone at one of the conferences, I hope he is from the ISB. That is the kind of network that I am looking for.

What do you think is the alumni’s role in building the school?

In terms of placements or lateral placements, the alumni network can help in shifting jobs to progress in their careers. And there should be more alum interaction which I don’t expect to happen immediately because we have only 2000 alums

What is the best thing that has happened to you in the last year?

The ISB!

What is your favourite place on campus?

My favorite place on campus is the Recreation Centre.

What is your favourite quote?

Hard work or failure, both are difficult choices, both are painful choices, so do you want to do hard work or go through failure?
