Tell us about yourself – your profile, recap your professional life after ISB including your career progression?
Before joining ISB, I was working in Pune as a practicing consultant orthopedic surgeon. I completed my MBBS in 1999 and MS (Ortho) in 2003 from B J Medical College, Pune. Upon graduation from ISB in 2008, I joined Fortunis Healthcare, Hyderabad to set up a150-acre health city project. I continued my research in spine and joint care while in Hyderabad. My purpose was to get enough experience in the corporate world so that I could apply it in my own venture. After one year of work, I moved to Pune and started my consultancy in orthopedic and healthcare management. I did management consultancy for a few hospitals and am still a advisor to a healthcare private equity firm, Spring Healthcare.

In 2010, I started my own venture, Spinalogy Clinic, a specialty clinic for non-surgical management of neck, back and joint pain. Within one year of inception, the clinic has achieved a good name. We are planning to expand now with a few more clinics in Pune.

Describe your fondest memory at ISB?
Many! I think every day at ISB was memorable. From winning the first prize of Rs 100, 000 at an international business plan competition organised by the Ministry of Science and Technology to participating in the Ganeshotav celebration on campus and starting a state-of-the-art photo studio as the Photography Club president – the memories are plenty. Being an Orthopedic Surgeon on campus, I also treated many aching backs and broken bones of colleagues and staff! It was also at ISB that my two-year-old daughter had her first stage performance. I also fondly remember all the dunking episodes in the swimming pool.

With the knowledge and experience gained at ISB, when looking back, tell us something that you would have done differently while you were a student here?
I would not have done too many things differently. Perhaps, I would have taken part in one more business plan completion and visited the recreation centre more often.

In your personal life, how have you changed post-ISB? Do you see yourself doing something differently because you went to ISB? What has left a lasting impression?Being a medical student, I was always focused on studies, patients and hospital work. I got a different perspective at ISB. It was enriching to meet so many people from different backgrounds and live in a mini-world! I was also exposed to many new concepts in management and life. Before coming to ISB, there were a lot of missing links for me in terms of starting my entrepreneurial venture. Here, I found and grasped all the missing links and executed my venture.

How do you think ISB has contributed to your career growth?
The School has contributed tremendously. I had joined ISB with the mindset to be an entrepreneur, not to find a job. Hence, all my time was spent working towards becoming a better entrepreneur rather than competing with my peers for jobs. This difference in mindset makes a lot of difference in your experience at ISB. Once you become job “de-focused,” a lot can be achieved in this one year. ISB has so many things to offer you should have the appetite for all that. The offerings can range from excellent networking opportunities to business plan competitions and extracurricular pursuits!

A highly talented and diverse peer group is a very important factor. I interacted with almost everybody in our class to understand their backgrounds and expertise. The peer group itself is a great teacher. All the subjects were taught and explained again to me by my friends who were experts in the respective areas. I never worried about getting A’s but worried if I did not understand the basic concept underlying the theory and its practical application.

My interactions with the resident and visiting faculty further added to my experience. I remember having dinner with at least half of the faculty members. And each and every time I discussed something with them, I realised how narrow my thinking was on various subjects! This gave me more courage and energy to go beyond the routine syllabus and understand what it takes to become a successful entrepreneur. I am really thankful to all the professors who added tons of management knowledge to my medical mind!

I also met so many entrepreneurs who built their enterprises from scratch and institutionalised their core expertise. That really thrilled me and spurred me to think about how I can institutionalise my medical skills and practice in a manner that is scalable, where many people can benefit from my innovations! That’s what has been and will be my motivation to work harder.

The support staff at ISB is phenomenal! Our ISB experience is not complete without their contribution to our comfort on campus. The housekeeping, administration, LRC, operations, CCA team were all excellent. From them, I learnt a lot about marketing and providing good services.

If you have to sum up ISB in one word?
