Leadership beyond Business – ISB and YPO Present a Programme for Business Leaders

The Indian School of Business (ISB) and the Young President’s Organisation (YPO), South Asia Chapter, organised a leadership programme named, “Entrepreneurial Growth Strategies” from May 1 – 3, 2008, specially designed for business leaders.

The Indian School of Business (ISB) celebrated its Seventh Graduation Day for the Class of 2008. Culminating their one year of experience at the ISB, 421 students were awarded certificates for the Post Graduate Programme in Management. The Chief Guest for the occasion was Kushal Pal Singh, Chairman, DLF Group. Other distinguished guests on the podium were Rajat Gupta, Chairman of the ISB Board, Thomas S Robertson, Dean of Wharton School, Professor M Rammohan Rao, Dean of ISB, ISB Area leaders, Professors Jagmohan Raju, Sri Sridharan, and Madan Pillutla, Deputy Dean and Associate Deans of ISB, and resident and visiting faculty members.

Faculty of the Year

The Batch of 2008 at the Indian School of Business (ISB), nominated Professor Mark Finn as the ‘Professor of the Year for Core Courses’, and Professor Sreenivas Kamma as the ‘Professor of the Year for Elective Courses’. The Professor of the Year Award at the ISB is a validation by the Students, of the excellence of their chosen mentors. It is also an expression of gratitude to the Professor who has managed to create an unequivocal impression on the student body. Each student nominates one professor for the Core Terms and one for the Elective Terms. The results are tallied and announced to the ISB community, a few days ahead of the Graduation Day. Professor Finn was chosen unanimously by the Student Community for his exceptional delivery of the course Financial Accounting in Decision Making. Professor Kamma was declared the best for his course on Corporate Control, Mergers and Acquisitions. Both the Professors scored high on the quality of their course content and delivery, which laid strong conceptual frameworks, and could be translated effectively in professional careers in the long run.

The ISB recognises outstanding teaching assistance and felicitates the academic associates who leave an overpowering mark among the student body. The associates support the students to reach their goals by motivating them in their scholastic pursuits. The student body nominates the associates who have helped them enhance their academic experience, for the award in turn. The Academic Associate Award for the year 2007-2008 went to Srinivas N He bagged the maximum number of points on the students’ nominations. Other Academic Associates who were recognised for their excellent contribution were Mahua Guha, Geetika Shah, P C Kutti Krishnan and Dhiraj Sharma.

CITNE and CEE launch the Accenture Management Development Academy (AMDA) in India

Motivated by Accenture’s desire to build a robust leadership pipeline that can meet and exceed today’s global solutions delivery needs, Centre for Executive Education (CEE) and the Centre for Information Technology and the Networked Economy (CITNE) have come together to deliver an educational intervention targeted at the team lead and associate manager levels. The programme is designed to train the Indian educated IT engineer to become a globally capable manager. It addresses a critical deficiency faced by major IT services companies at the middle-manager level. The two-stage capability certification programme will encompass delivery excellence, people management, business process knowledge, fundamentals of business operations and key aspects of innovation and value creation. The programme will be delivered through a combination of scalable platforms such as the web, classroom and will have a significant active learning component.

  • Professor Rajesh Chakrabarti has been invited to join the editorial review board of "Corporate Governance - An International Review", a Blackwell Journal.
  • Professor Dishan Kamdar’s paper has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Applied Psychology, a top tier journal in the OB Area. The paper “Substituting for Negative Leadership and Enhancing Positive Leadership: In-Role Perceptions Buffer the Impact of Negative LMX on Helping and Amplify the Impact of Positive LMX on Voice” is co- authored with J Joireman and L Van Dyne. This is his sixth publication in the Journal of Applied Psychology in a short period of time.
  • Professor Mudit Kapoor’s paper, "Measuring risk on investment in informal (illegal) housing: Theory and Evidence from Pune, India" co-authored with D Le Blanc has been accepted for publication in Regional Science and Urban Economics.
  • Professor Ravi Bapna’s paper has been accepted for publication in the Journal of MIS, a top tier journal in the Information Systems area.
  • The paper "Auctioning Vertically Integrated Online Services: Computational Approaches for Real-time Allocation" is co-authored with P Goes and A Gupta.
  • ISB extends a warm welcome to Professor Shamika Ravi who has joined the ISB as an Assistant Professor in the Economics and Public Policy Area. Prior to this, she was a Visiting Assistant Professor at the ISB. Her teaching and research areas include Microeconomics, Development Economics, Analytical Statistics, Microfinance, Indian Financial System, and Institutional Economics Welfare and Poverty. Professor Ravi has a PhD in Economics from New York University. She is a Fellow of the Microfinance Management Institute Washington DC and the Open Society Institute (Soros Foundation).
  • ISB extends a warm welcome to Professor Reuben Abraham who has joined the ISB as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Entrepreneurship Area and as Director, BoP Learning Lab India. Professor Abraham has been associated with the ISB as a Visiting Scholar in the recent past. He has a PhD from Columbia University, focusing on telecommunications policy and development economics.
    Professor Abraham is on the board of the Soros Economic Development Fund, IndiaCo Ventures and Acumen Fund. He is also a senior advisor with the Soros/Omidyar/Google India SME fund, which is raising a $17 million Small to Medium Enterprise (SME) Investment Company for India to create job opportunities and spur greater economic participation for a larger segment of the population.
  • ISB congratulates Professor Dishan Kamdar on being promoted to the rank of Associate Professor with tenure, based on the recommendations of the Personnel Committee. His promotion assumes special significance for the ISB because he is the first person to be promoted from Assistant to Associate Professor at the ISB.

  • Kumara Guru, Assistant Director, Dean's Office, has been elected as the Chairman of the Hyderabad chapter of the CII Young Indians for 2008 - 09. Promoted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Young Indians ('Yi'), is a group consisting of Young Indian entrepreneurs, owner - managers and professionals from various walks of life. Yi undertakes activities in areas like economy, education, healthcare, youth affairs, employability and the environment.

  • Vishal Mangla, a Researcher at CAF, has recently been accepted in the PhD programme at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. One of the highest-ranked finance PhD programmes in the world, Kellogg typically receives several hundred applications each year from aspiring doctoral students across the world and accepts only a few. Congratulations to Vishal on his remarkable success!!
  • Each year, CAF recruits two or three bright and motivated recent graduates in Finance, Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Engineering, and Computational Sciences as Researchers. While at CAF, the selected candidates attend classes in finance, statistics, and econometrics, develop a solid grounding in theoretical and applied finance, and work on research projects under the direct supervision of the ISB faculty and their research partners. The education and skills gained during their tenure at CAF are designed to make them effective candidates for doctoral programmes at premier business schools in the world.
